Each issue was based on a single theme, and this enabled us to cover the topics we chose with a kind of comprehensive depth that is rarely found on the newsstands. And we were proud to be able to offer the world a philosophical and spiritual tipple-decker sandwich every six months."

Also, we wanted to be more inclusive, to begin to explore culture, politics, the arts, and current events, expanding our onging inquiry beyond the so-called spiritual marketpalce. In fact, what we're trying to do, in our own small way, is help to redefine the very meaning of the word "spiritual" for the postmodern world at the beginning of the twenty-first century."

"Boycott Microsoft! Microsoft's XP software violates the law and abrogates consumer rights. When you buy XP software, you do not own it, instead Microsoft owns you.
I can remember when Microsoft was just another software company, subject to market forces and amenable to common sense. I can also remember when A.T.&T. was a telephone company.
But that is all in the past. At the time I write this, Microsoft is in the process of releasing Windows/Office XP, and this release signals a historical departure for Microsoft. It signals the first shot in a war — a war between Microsoft and its customers.
Under this new system, your obligation to Microsoft doesn't end when you purchase the software, that merely begins it. Not included in the activation dialog is the information that trivial system changes may invalidate your activation, you will be required to contact Microsoft each and every time you need to re-activate the software for whatever reason, or if you try to sell or give away the software (Microsoft only allows this to happen once), or if you try to exercise your right to install the software on two systems used by one person. Also, the total number of activations is always less than 12, after which you must throw the software away and start over."

"Fighting the Chemical War: Over the last century there has been an enormous increase in the number of chemicals that we come into contact with throughout our everyday lives. Chemicals are present in the houses we live in, the food we eat, the water we drink, the toiletries and cosmetics we use, even in the air that we breathe. With over 70,000 in existence, escape from contact with chemicals is impossible, as they now exist in virtually every facet of our modern lives. Therefore, it may come as a shock to discover 85% of the commonly used chemicals that we encounter so regularly have not even had minimum safety testing and there is no obligation on the chemical industry to properly assess the chemicals they sell or to use safer alternatives."
"Scientists and doctors tell us that life today is healthier than ever before. The main killer diseases of the past have been eradicated, people have a longer life expectancy, mortality rates are lower and our hygiene conditions are better than those of previous generations. However, in the face of the increasing numbers of new disorders that are appearing, should we believe them? Occurrences of cancer are now more common than previously and there has been an increase in asthma, heart disease, allergies, infertility and chemical and pesticide poisonings over the past fifty years. While controversy still remains as to whether or not chemicals are causing these conditions, there is growing evidence from the UK's Environmental Medicine Foundation to demonstrate that it is highly likely chemicals are causing many people to become ill and the EEA (European Environmental Agency) and UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme) Annual Message 2 on the State of Europe's Environment states that widespread exposures to low doses of chemicals may be causing harm, possibly irreversibly, especially to sensitive groups such as children, pregnant women and parts of the environment. What you have to decide is that while we are waiting for the scientists to make their mind up, do you really want to take the risks?"
"More than 300-500 man-made chemicals have been found contaminating our bodies 1 and links have been found between man-made chemicals and illnesses such as testicular and prostate cancer 2 , both of which are on the increase. Worryingly, there are now so many chemicals in our environment that it has become difficult to identify which of them might be the cause of a particular environmental or human health problem. Synthetic chemicals are appearing in alarming places - for example, a 1999 study by the World-Wide Fund for Nature showed that samples of British mothers' breast milk were contaminated with more than 350 chemicals from products including perfumed suntan lotions and pesticides and the effects on various animals, birds 3 and fish 4 include birth defects, cancers and damage to nervous, reproductive and immune systems. The key to the problem is that the government has to prove a chemical poses a threat before it is removed from the market - which is a difficult and expensive process. However, chemical manufacturers are still allowed to introduce most chemicals onto the market without having to prove that they are safe."
"Think your house is safe? Then think again. Household cleaners, personal care products, pesticides, paints and solvents are all common in the home. You will more than likely have used most - if not all - of them before, and all probably contained harmful toxic chemicals. The simple act of cleaning your carpet, washing your dishes or painting your walls can easily result in you coming into contact with products that could make you ill. For example, many carpet and upholstery cleaners contain toxic chemicals designed to overpower the stain, which can include perchlorethylene, a known animal carcinogen since the 1990's and one which the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recently found enough adequate evidence about to classify the solvent as a possible human carcinogen. The US Environmental Protection Agency issues a fact sheet warning of the dangers of perchlorethylene, stating it can cause anaemia and damage the kidneys, liver and nervous system. Dishwasher detergents are also toxic - most contain chlorine in a highly concentrated dry form, which can be poisonous if taken internally in large doses. The US environmental agency found that dioxin, a by-product of chlorine, was a potent carcinogen."
"The walls of your house could be another cause for concern. Many household paints give off fumes as they dry. Modern paints and wood stains often contain poisonous cadmium or titanium oxide and metallic paints or those with a high metallic content can also be poisonous in large doses. In the last few decades many chemicals have made their ways into our homes; a study conducted by America's Environmental Protection Agency 6 comparing indoor and outdoor pollution found the population they studied breathed two to five times more hazardous chemicals when indoors than if they had sat in their gardens, even amongst those living in highly polluted cities. Formaldehyde can be found in most houses in some form and has been used in latex paints, fabrics, automotive resins and cheap furniture. This is one of the best-known volatile organic compound pollutants, and a carcinogen. Organisations such as the World Health Organisation, Environmental Protection Agency and National Safety Council warn products containing substances such as formaldehyde commonly produce toxic fumes in a process called 'outgassing', and ironically the trend towards energy conservation has meant that many such fumes come to be trapped within new buildings. The Safety and Heath Agency in the US recommends formaldehyde be handled carefully as it is suspected of causing cancer and is an irritant to the eyes, skin and throat as well as causing flu-like symptoms, rashes and neurological illnesses."

The Samaritans
"Samaritans was started in 1953 in London by a young vicar called Chad Varah (below) who worked in the city parish of St Stephen, Walbrook in the City. Through his work in a number of different parishes in the city he had seen the range and extent of the distress experienced by people everywhere, every day. During his career he had offered counselling to his parishioners, and he increasingly wanted to do something specific to help people in distress who had no one to turn to. He makes reference to one example of a girl aged 14, whom he had buried - in unconsecrated ground. She had started her periods, but having no one to talk to believed that she had a sexually transmitted disease and took her own life."
"He says, "I might have dedicated myself to suicide prevention then and there, providing a network of people you could 'ask' about anything, however embarrassing, but I didn't come to that until later".
"When he was offered charge of the parish of St Stephen, Walbrook, in the summer of 1953 he knew that the time was right for him to launch what he called a "999 for the suicidal". At the time, suicide was still illegal in the UK and so many people who were in difficult situations and who felt suicidal were unable to talk to anyone about it without worrying about the consequences. A confidential emergency service for people "in distress who need spiritual aid" was what Chad felt was needed to address the problems he saw around him. He was, in his own words, "a man willing to listen, with a base and an emergency telephone".
"15 years after the emergency 999 number was set up, the number MAN 9000 was chosen for the helpline - to signify a human emergency number. Luckily the number of the church was MANsion house 9000. It was the first, and is still probably the best known telephone helpline in the UK. Pictured on the right is Chad with the original telephone."
"The first call to the new service was made on 2nd November 1953 and this date is recognised as Samaritans' official birthday. However, in two key respects, the service did not become Samaritans as it is known today until a few months later."
"In order to supplement his income, Chad wrote and illustrated articles for children's comics like the Daily Eagle so he knew many of the journalists who worked on national newspapers. He had achieved a lot of publicity for the service by telling his contacts about the new service and The Daily Mirror gave it a name which was quickly adopted by other media and the public (left). On December 7th, 1953, it coined the term, "Telephone Good Samaritans" and although Samaritans is not a religious organisation, the name has stuck and become synonymous with the idea of people being there for others in emotional distress."
"The publicity meant that within a few weeks it was clear that Chad would not be able to cope on his own, such was the demand for both phone and face to face support. But the newspaper coverage had attracted volunteers as well as clients. Their official duties were to provide tea and coffee and sit with the clients, offering them someone to chat to whilst they waited for their appointment. However, it soon became clear that their role was much more central to the service. Often, the clients would pour out their problems to these 'receptionists' and many felt no need to speak to Chad afterwards, or intimated that it had been helpful to talk about how they were feeling."
"Chad began to understand that the action of speaking to someone they did not know, who would simply listen to what they had to say, could be beneficial for people in distress. Because the volunteers were not known to the clients, they were able to be more honest and open about their feelings and they did not feel judged as they might have by a professional or someone they knew, while the volunteers, who were not trained at this time, would not interrupt and felt unable to offer advice. Inadvertently, some years before the benefits of counselling as we now know it were widely recognised, Samaritans was able to give people a space where they could potentially find objectivity and perhaps a way forward, through being listened to. The emotional support services offered by Samaritans today is based on these same principles."
"Chad said, "It was a straightforward matter of observation that the proportion of the callers I actually interviewed diminished, the ones I did see were easier to help because of the time they had spent with a volunteer…Eventually I was seeing only about one in eight of those who came."
"In February 1954, Chad officially handed over the task of supporting the callers to the volunteers and Samaritans, based on the principles that it is today was born."
"From then Chad became known as the 'Director' and he continued to be in charge of many aspects of the service such as selecting and training volunteers until 1974. His involvement with Samaritans has continued through the years, primarily working on developing a network of international support services to mirror Samaritans' work in the UK but also in shaping the organisation."
