Electroporation: A Possible Mechanism for MCS?
Always on the search for "answers" regarding all aspects of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis ( ME ) and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity ( MCS ) I had come across the recently discovered physiological process known as "Electroporation" on the Internet. It's a physiological process whereby cellular permeability is substantially increased by exposure to electric/electromagnetic fields. I understand that the pharmaceutical companies are very interested in this as a means of achieving desired effective-dose levels of medications by giving 10, 20 or even many more times less of the prescribed medicinal drug! Can't you just hear those cash registers ringing? CAA-CHING!
Anyway, for me "Electroporation" immediately seemed a very possible mechanism - at least for some sufferers - for explaining how small amounts of various chemicals in the typical modern environment can greatly impact on the MCS sufferer and not on a medically normal person.
For Example
If, due to exposure to certain kinds of electromagnetic radiation, perhaps prolonged exposure as in the case of a computer operator [VDU Terminal Sickness?] - a cell can be swamped via this Electroporation process with very substantial multiples of any environmental chemical it is exposed to - so that dangerous cell overdose occurs at normally 'safe' chemical exposure levels - then it seems perfectly reasonable to me to suspect that here in this energy/chemical interaction process called Electroporation we might have yet another possible culprit mechanism for the organic MCS illness. Surely this possible connection is at least worthy of some serious looking into; but I don't think anyone is - yet!
The Fly in the Ointment
What these Electroporation researches found was that there was only a small window of opportunity for this Electroporation process to function in a sustainable way. If the cell was exposed to the triggering electric/electromagnetic field for more than the required short period necessary to increase or "open" the cells permeability - then that permeability was permanently damaged leaving the cell stuck permanently in the "open" state.
A Simple Challenge
Now, if I try to imagine what the end result of such a damaged state would be like if the damage was fairly extensive in a whole human being then the picture that starts to emerge in my mind sure looks very much like MCS to me. And having used computer monitors a lot ever since they where invented and having consequently been exposed to huge amounts of various kinds of radiations from them - especially the earlier models - it seems to me that if this Electroporation process isn't able to actually cause MCS directly then it must at least be a substantial contributing factor to those so exposed. Unfortunately, nobody has ever yet tested my "cells" for abnormal "permeability". Anyone care to? Huh? Because I'm sure up for it guys.
Opening Pandora's Box
Establishing a demonstrable causal link between the Electroporation process and the much bullied and brutalized organic illness of MCS in the public mind would, I suspect, be an absolute nightmare of epic proportions for some of our established and 'highly respected' institutions - who have been glibly telling us for years, with had clasped over heart, that not only are all these chemicals in our 'modern' domestic, social and workplace environments are perfectly safe - BUT - that our television sets and our home and office computers screens etc, are also perfectly safe too. All safe! Really? Even synergistically in all sorts of untested combinations? Personally, I am very strongly disinclined to believe that. From where I am standing prolonged exposure to both chemicals and strong electromagnetic fields is a truly deadly combination.
